Delaware Wing ES Training

As one of the three core missions of Civil Air Patrol, Emergency Services ("ES") is vital to the organization. ES is one of the most visible and important ways a CAP member can provide service to his or her community. However, in order to carry out the mission of ES, adequate and proper training is required.

There are many different areas, or tasks, for which a member may train. Cadet members are generally limited to ground operations, radio operations, aircraft marshaling, and assisting at the command post as a staff assistant. Senior members have these opportunities available to them, as well as flight crews and branch and section chiefs at the command post.

All training starts at the local squadron. Every squadron should have an ES Officer that assists the members of the squadron with navigating the requirements for each ES position, as well as assisting the Squadron Commander with coordinating ES training for the unit. If the local ES Officer cannot provide the resources required for a specific type of training, the ES Officer would contact the Wing Director of Emergency Services to obtain the proper resources to carry out the training.

At the Wing level, there are two types of training that are offered: targeted specific training and wing-wide SAR Exercises ("SAREXes").

The targeted specific training is designed to provide members with training in a specific area of interest. All topics related to a particular skill will be presented during the targeted training class, with the hopes that members will leave with the knowledge and skills required to perform that task in a real-world operation.

A wing-wide SAREX takes the training to the next level. Members will get the opportunity to take what they've learned at their squadron or at a targeted training course and apply it in a real-world scenario. Members should not come to a SAREX with a "blank page" and expect to pick up all of the skills necessary to perform in a particular function. That is the role of local and targeted training. A SAREX tests how well a member will operate when real-life scenarios are presented.

Many opportunities will be afforded by the Delaware Wing during 2019. Listed below is training scheduled for 2019. For more information, contact your squadron ES Officer.
